Esther is the majority shareholder at Schwartz Gilligan since January 2014. In June 2016, she became Managing Partner, and in January 2018, she made Schwartz Gilligan the largest female-owned law firm in Chicago. For the past 30 years, she led the Insurance Coverage and Appellate practice groups to national recognition.

She graduated with honors from IIT-Chicago Kent College of Law in 1981, where she was a member of the Law Review. Her experience includes litigating more than 800 declaratory judgment actions for personal and commercial carriers in most coverage lines. She has handled over 260 appeals and argued in our nation’s highest courts. She has obtained many favorable insurance outcomes, as well as decisions in areas of tort immunity, civil rights, criminal assaults, sexual abuse cases, and premises liability.

Esther also handles regulatory matters before the Department of Insurance for several clients, and has drafted insurance policies for major insurance companies for whom she speaks regularly at in-house seminars. She serves major insurers as a consultant on Medicare secondary payer issues. She also acts as consultant to car rental companies on risk management and insurance issues, having drafted major changes to their rental and lease agreements.

Esther has several years of recognition in the Illinois Leading Lawyers publication for Insurance Coverage and Appeals, and serves on the Advisory Board. She also serves on the Illinois Super Lawyers Blue Ribbon Panel. Since 2011, she was voted a “Top 50 Female Illinois Super Lawyers” and a “Top 100 Illinois Attorneys.” She is a frequent lecturer and moderator at CLE seminars.

She is a member of the Illinois State and Chicago Bar Associations, as well as the Appellate Lawyers Association, Defense Research Institute, and the Council of Litigation Management. She has held the highest “AV” rating from Martindale Hubbell for many years.
